In an industry that relies heavily on visuals, successful construction graphic design can be vital. Some believe they can handle graphic design on their own, however, there is more that goes into it than logos and pretty colours.
Construction PR have been working within many areas of the industry for over 13 years. We have been lucky enough to work with companies to not only improve their graphic design, but also start from scratch to produce incredible and eye catching results. Our background gives us a great platform to understand what works and what doesn’t; so today, we want to share with you our top 5 tips for ensuring you graphic design never falters.
1. Identify your target audience
One of the first and most important steps is to identify your target audience. This is who you are trying to market your products and services to. If the design elements of your company reflect and attract those people, you will be able to create an effective marketing strategy. You must appeal to both potential and current customers to ensure they don’t go to competitors instead.
It is vital to learn everything that you can about your target market before you start any graphic design. This may involve understanding things like their age, sex, marital status, and how those things effect what people want from your business. It can also include finding out about your competitors and how they appeal to your target audience. You can draw ideas from them for inspiration and it can help you identify what people want to see.
2. Chose designs that reflect your business
Construction graphic design is all about showing people who you are. When creating designs for business cards or adverts, it’s important to get across what your business is about. Obviously, graphic design is about visuals more than words, but you still want people to know who you are and what you do. Chose to go with a design that reflects your niche. For example, if you are a company that hires out cranes, diggers, and other construction equipment, you may want to include line art of one of those within you designs, especially on business cards etc.
3. Consistency is key!
Brand consistency is vital, not just with construction graphic design, but with graphic design in general. So many companies out there are instantly recognisable by their logo and brand colours across whatever media they present themselves on. Your company’s graphic design should be similar across the board. This means having the same colours and fonts. If your logo is blue, you should incorporate this in all your marketing materials. These elements then become part of your brand identity and help returning customers or new customers continue to recognise who you are. Logos, your website, social media, flyers, emails, and business cards all need to have a similar look and feel to them. People will begin to associate these colours and images with you and your brand.
4. Tell a story with visuals
Infographics have become such important parts of social media marketing over the last few years. They are defined as a visual representation of information or data. This can be charts, graphs, bullet points with minimal text, and simple imagery. Infographics are designed to be striking, engaging and sharable, allowing companies to give information quickly and clearly. These little graphics are perfect for people to repost onto their Instagram stories or to share with their friends.
When creating these infographics, it’s important to remember to keep the text minimal. Instead, everything you want to get across should be able to be told visually. One of the best ways to do this is nailing down the design with text first before stripping most of the text away. If you can still tell what is meant to be going on, it’s good to go. You should also question – is this something I would share on my own Instagram story? If not, then take it back to the drawing board and try some new ideas!
5. Less is more
Construction graphic design can sometimes look overcomplicated. Many companies in the past have fallen into this trap. Construction PR believe that simple is the way forward. Creating graphics that are overcomplicated and busy can lead to confusion. It creates a better user experience if any graphics you produce are as streamlined and simple as they can be. If your logos and marketing designs are too busy, you run the risk of looking unprofessional and loosing potential customers because of this. The busyness of graphics can lead to confusion and reflect negatively on your brand.
Be sure to include ‘negative space’ within your logos and other marketing materials. Although some may see this as something to avoid, the blank space actually helps to draw attention to the more key parts of your graphics.
